The Cisco Kid

The Cisco Kid was a film, radio, television and comic book series based on the fictional Western character created by O. Henry in his short story "The Caballero's Way," published in 1907 in the collection Heart of the West. The Cisco Kid character only appears in this one story, “The Caballero’s Way”. He was more infamous than famous. He was more criminal then hero. He may have been a non-Hispanic character and a cruel outlaw. There is a link to an audio of O. Henry's "The Caballero's Way”, below.

Films and television depicted the Cisco Kid as a heroic Mexican caballero.

Four Actors played the Cisco Kid in the movies: Warner Baxter (3 Movies), Cesar Romero (6 Movies - one movie below), Gilbert Roland (6 Movies - 2 movies below), and Duncan Relando (8 Movies and TV - TV Programs below).

Cesar Romero (1907 – 1994) was a Cuban American film and television actor, who played The Joker in the 1960s television series Batman. Romero played "Latin lovers" in films from the 1930s until the 1950s, usually in supporting roles. He starred as The Cisco Kid in six westerns made between 1939 and 1941.

Gilbert Roland (1905 - 1994) was born in Mexico and planned to become a bullfighter like his father, but these plans were shelved when his family moved to the U.S. during the Mexican Revolution. Roland began getting film work as an extra in 1918. In the 1940s, Roland became the first and only genuine Mexican to portray the Cisco Kid onscreen. He starred as the Cisco Kid in 6 films.

Duncan Renaldo (1904 – 1980) starred in 8 Hollywood Westerns as The Cisco Kid, and in 1950, he began playing the role in a popular television series that ran until 1956 (156 Episodes). In the age of black-and-white television, the show was filmed in color. As Cisco, Renaldo roamed the Old West on a black-and-white horse named Diablo. His sidekick, Pancho was played by Leo Carillo.

The Cisco Kid came to radio October 2, 1942, with Jackson Beck in the title role and Louis Sorin as Pancho. This series continued on Mutual until 1945. It was followed by another Mutual series in 1946, starring Jack Mather and Harry Lang, who continued to head the cast in the syndicated radio series of more than 600 episodes from 1947 to 1956.

The TV Series started out with the words, "O. Henry's famous Robin Hood of the old west."
