Bob Steele: 1907 - 1988

The 50+ year Hollywood career of Bob Steele begins in the low budget films of the 1920s when he was a youngster.

Bob, and his real life twin brother Bill, were in a batch of silent shorts labeled the 'Adventures of Bill and Bob'. These were directed by the father of the boys, Robert North Bradbury, Sr. And it was during this time, that Robert Adrian Bradbury became 'Robert North Bradbury, Jr.' ... sometimes shortened to Bob Bradbury, Jr.

Bob continued working in juvenile roles in silent films, including many B-Westerns directed by his father, by then a prolific director. In 1927, he took the name Bob Steele for the movie The Mojave Kid, beginning a long and successful ride into the world of horse operas for a variety of independent and major movie studios. Though only 5’10” (considerably shorter than other Western heroes and villains of the day), Steele’s confident riding and scrappy fighting style won over audiences in hundreds of features and serials, including 20 “Three Mesquiteers” Westerns (as “Tucson Smith”) and as the title character in eight Billy the Kid pictures. He even became the subject of a popular comic book, Bob Steele Western.

Although he occasionally ventured into more mainstream pictures, including 1939’s Of Mice and Men (as Curly), Steele remained primarily a Western figure, and after a quarter century of ups and downs as a character actor (notably in 1946’s The Big Sleep as Canino), Steele became a familiar face on TV Westerns, including Rawhide, Cheyenne, The Californians, and Maverick. In 1965, when he arrived at FortCourage, Steele achieved a place in TV history as Trooper Duffy, one of his best-known roles. Steele made his last picture, Nightmare Honeymoon, in 1973, He passed away December 21, 1988 following a long illness.

1. Mystery Squadron (1933) – Bob Steele:

A 12 Chapter 1933 Mascot Movie Serial.

Hank Davis (Jack Mulhall) is the foreman on a huge dam project. He hires two stunt flyers he once flew with, Fred Cromell (Bob Steele) and Bill "Jellybean" Cook (Guinn Williams), to protect his dam from the air raids by a group known as the Mystery Squadron, under the leadership of the mysterious Black Ace. Each attack is preceded by the arrival of a miniature airplane carrying a warning that the Mystery Squadron is about to attack. This makes the workers somewhat disturbed and distressed to the point that they mistake Fred and Bill for members of the criminal air armada. The workers form a vigilante lynch mob from which Fred and Bill must escape and continue their 12-chapter search to unmask The Black Ace.

1. The Oklahoma Cyclone (1930) - Bob Steele:

Jimmy Henderson (Bob Steele) is looking for his missing father.

Suspecting McKim, he joins his gang posing as the outlaw the Oklahoma Cyclone.

The gang members take a dislike to him except for Slim (Al St. John) who becomes his friend, a friend he will need when the showdown begins.

2. The Nevada Buckaroo (1931) - Bob Steele

When the Nevada Kid (Bob Steele) gets caught in a stage robbery, the gang leader Cherokee (George Hayes) gets him released by forging a petition to the Governor.

The Kid tries to go straight but the stage he is guarding gets robbed. When the Sheriff (Glen Cavender) jails Cherokee who was not in on the robbery, the Kid gets caught effecting Cherokee's escape and finds himself in jail again.

3. Law of the West (1932) - Bob Steele

For revenge the outlaw Morgan (Ed Brady) steals the Carruthers young son. Seventeen years later Carruthers (Hank Bell) arrives in the valley where Morgan, his gang, and the now grown Bob (Bob Steele) hide.

5. Texas Buddies (1932) - Bob Steele:

Kincade and Blake cause a mail plane carrying a payroll to make a forced landing in the desert. When they try to get the money, prospectors Ted (Bob Steele) and Si (Gabby Hayes) drive them away. With the pilot shot, Ted takes over as pilot figuring another attempt will be made and this time the Sheriff will be there.

6. Galloping Romeo (1933) - Bob Steele

Money is mysteriously disappearing from a locked trunk atop the stage even though the trunk arrives still locked. When pals Bob Rivers (Bob Steele) and Grizzly (George 'Gabby' Hayes) get the jop driving the stage, the same thing happens

7. Alias John Law (1935) – Bob Steele:

John Clark (Bob Steele) and his deaf pal, Bootch Collum (Buck Connors), are trailed by U. S. Marshal Lamar Bly (Jack Rockwell), who thinks they are part of The Kootney Kid's (Earl Dwire) gang, which had just held up the stage coach. But the gang attacks the pair, and Bly joins them in the gunfight. Bly is wounded and is taken to a Mexican's camp to recover. He gives John his badge and authorizes him to take up the hunt

8. Sundown Saunders (1935) - Bob Steele:

When Sundown (Bob Steele) wins a horse race he is paid with a deed to a ranch. Arriving at the ranch he finds the Prestons (Marie Burton/Jack Rockwell) already living there. They bought it from the fake land agent Taggart (Ed Cassidy) who then frames Sundown for murder.

9. No Man's Range (1935) - Bob Steele

Summoned by Ed Oliver (Charles K. French), Jim Hale (Bob Steele) and sidekick Fuzz (Buck Connors) arrive at Oliver's ranch to find a range war in progress. Unknown to Jim, Ed Brady (Steve Clark) has kidnapped Oliver and replaced him with a stooge. Brady is after the Green ranch and Jim and Fuzz now set out to help Helen Green (Roberta Gale).

10. The Rider of the Law (1935) - Bob Steele

Bob Marlow (Bob Steele) is sent undercover to an Arizona town where an outlaw gang, comprised of the six Tolliver brothers, have taken over the town and terrorizing the citizens. He comes to town, posing as an Eastern dude, and, through a series of incidents manages to get rid of three of the brothers, mostly through their own ineptness. The remaining brothers decide to get-while-the-gettin'-is good, rob the bank and head for the Mexican border.

11. Cavalry (1936) – Bob Steele:

Just after the Civil War, Captain Thorn (Bob Steele) is sent west to help protect the new telegraph line that is under construction. Leeds is out to establish an independent nation in the west and tries stopping its construction and also incoming wagon trains by inciting the Indians to attack both of them.

12. Feud Maker, The (1938) – Bob Steele:

Tex (Bob Steele) is brought in to help fight in a range war between the cowmen and the nesters. As he tries to reach a peaceable end to the conflict, he learns that his old nemesis may be behind the feud.

13. Last of the Warrens (1936) – Bob Steele:

Ted Warren (Bob Steele) returns from WW1 to find that everyone thinks he was dead. The culprit is Kent who intercepted his mail, rustled the Warren cattle, took over the Warren ranch, and is now after Ted's girl friend. When Kent's henchmen fail to kill Ted, Kent shoots Ted's father and leaves him for dead. But only wounded, the plan is to have Warren appear as a ghost to get a confession from Kent.

14. Law Rides, The (1936) – Bob Steele:

Hank Davis kills Jack Lewis to get his gold mine. Bruce Conway (Bob Steele) brings him in but then realizes Davis is the only one that knows where the mine is. Bruce and his pal Whitey rescue Davis from the lynch mob only to have avis' gang catch them and leave them in the desert to die.

15. Brand of the Outlaws (1936) - Bob Steele

Gary Gray (Bob Steele) arrives only to be caught up in the rustling activities of Ben Holt (Jack Rockwell) and his gang. First Holt brands him for rustling and then frames him for murder. Proven innocent, Gary foils the gang's stage holdup and then heads after Holt whom he now knows to be the real killer. But Holt knows he is coming and waits unseen in ambush.

16. Border Phantom (1937) - Bob Steele

Cowboy Larry O'Day (Bob Steele) and his sidekick Lucky Smith (Don Barclay) happen upon a distraught Barbara Hartwell (Harley Wood), who is about to be arrested for the murder of her uncle. With Barbara behind bars, Larry is determined to find the real killer and soon finds himself in the middle of a mystery involving crazed German entomologists and a smuggling ring bringing Chinese "picture girls" across the Mexican border for sale to wealthy Chinese bachelors.

17. The Arizona Gunfighter (1937) - Bob Steele

When Colt (Bob Steele) kills the men that murdered his father, he escapes his pursuers and joins Wolf (Ted Adams) and his outlaw gang. After two years Wolf breaks up the gang, deeds his ranch to Colt, and turns himself in. Now an honest rancher, things are going fine for Colt until Wolf's old gang shows up under a new leader. Colt get the Governor (A.C. Henderson) to release Wolf claiming the two of them can bring in the gang.

18. The Gun Ranger (1937) - Bob Steele

Ranger Dan Larsen (Bob Steele), after Wally Smeed (Ernie Adams) goes unconvinced of killing the father of Molly Pearson (Eleanor Stewart), resigning from the Rangers in order to work undercover to track down the leaders of the outlaw band that runs the town.

19. Riders of the Sage (1939) - Bob Steele

In an effort to get Jim Martin (Frank LaRue) to sell his ranch, the Halsey brothers have kidnapped his son Tom (Dave O'Brien). When Bob Burke (Bob Steele) goes after him alone, he gets help from the gang known as the Riders of the Sage.

20. Billy the Kid in Texas (1940) - Bob Steele:

Arriving in a lawless Texas town, Billy (Bob Steele) finds his old friend Fuzzy (Al St. John). When Billy stands up to Flash and his gang, he is made Sheriff. He and Fuzzy then set out to retrieve the money stolen by Flash and clear his brother Gil Cooper who is part of the gang. This is the second of the "Billy the Kid" series from PRC that starred Bob Steele

21. Billy the Kid's Gun Justice (1940) - Bob Steele:

Billy (Bob Steele) and his sidekick Fuzzy (Al St. John) trying to unravel the mystery of a friend's missing uncle and bring to justice the criminals behind the disappearance whom they suspect are also behind a related land swindle

22. Billy the Kid in Santa Fe (1941) - Bob Steele

After being framed for murder, Billy (Bob Steele) escapes jail with the help of his pals Jeff (Rex Lease) and Fuzzy (Al St. John). They travel to Santa Fe where they meet up with Joe Benson, the man paid by Barton to lie at Billy's trial. This time Joe is framed for murder

23. Marked Trails (1944) - Bob Steele and Hoot Gibson

Jack Slade (Mauritz Hugo) and Mary Conway, alias Blanche (Veda Ann Borg), being recognized as known and wanted crooks by deputy marshal Harry Stevens (Steve Clark) and, when he orders them out of town, Slade kills him. His son, Bob Stevens (Bob Steele) and friend Parkford (Hoot Gibson) become U.S. Marshals and proceed to rid the town of the cut-throat gang that has been terrorizing the citizens.

24. Northwest Trail (1945) – Bob Steele: [In Color]

Mountie Matt O'Brien (Bob Steele) is assigned to escort Miss Owens to a remote outpost. But when he finds an illegal mining operation there that is smuggling gold across the border, his superior Sgt. Means orders him to leave.

This is based on a James Oliver Curwood story.

25. Wildfire (1945) – Bob Steele: [In Color]

Pete Fanning (John Miljan) has his men rustle horses and then blame it on a wild horse named Wildfire. Happy (Bob Steele) and Alkali (Sterling Holloway) arrive and immediately get into trouble with Fanning and his men. When Alkali is shot, Happy catches the outlaws but the Judge not only releases them, he discharges the Sheriff (Eddie Dean) and tries to arrest Happy for rustling.

26. Smoky Smith (1935) - Bob Steele - Smokey, looking for his parent's killers, trails a gang to Blaze's ranch. Posing as a wanted man he joins the gang. He hopes to find a ring taken from his father that will identify the murderer. [NEW]

27. Hidden Valley (1932) - Bob Steele plays a cowboy hired by an archaeologist to find hidden treasure in Hidden Valley. But there are many dangers. Just when the treasure is found, the archaeologist is killed and Bob Steele is charged with his murder. [NEW]

28. Big Calibre (1935) Bob Steele - Intent on avenging his father's murder, Roy Neal (Bob Steele) and his sidekick Rusty find themselves in the border town of Gladstone where Neal is mistakenly arrested for the robbery of a mail truck. After escaping, Neal joins up with pretty June Bowers whose father has apparently also been murdered. Neal, suspecting two of the town's leading businessmen of being the murderers, tries to flush them out before the sheriff can lock him up again. [NEW]

29. Billy the Kid's Fighting Pals (1941) - Riding toward Paradise, Billy the Kid (Bob Steele), Fuzzy Jones (Al St. John) and Jeff (Carleton Young) witness the murder of Marshal Mason (Stanley Price). Fuzzy rides into town, posing as the dead lawman, and learns the town is being ruled by a gang, supposedly headed by Burke (Curley Dresden), but, in reality, bossed by a leading businessman in Paradise. The trio set out to put an end to the lawlessness but Ann Hardy (Phyllis Adair), ward of the town banker, Hardy (Edward Peil Sr.), keeps placing obstacles in their path, for reasons of her own. They are aided in their task by Lopez (Julian Rivero), a member of the Mexico secret service, posing as a bartender. [NEW]

30. Riders of the Desert (1932) - Bob Steele - Ranger Bob Houston (Bob Steele) is riding shotgun on a stage driven by Silver and carrying a valuable shipment when it is attacked by Hash-Knife Brooks (Gabby Hayes) and his gang, including Apache Joe, a sadistic half-breed and Gomez, who vies with Brooks for leadership of the outlaws. Silver is killed and Bob wounded in the arm. Bob makes it back to Ranger headquarters and is told by his father, Ranger Captain Dan Houston that they can officially do nothing as the Rangers have been disbanded by the New Mexico state government. After a farewell dinner, with rangers played by Glenn Strange, Chcuk Baldra and Cactus Mack singing "Auld Lang Syne", they all go their own ways, with Bob going back to college. A few months later, Bob learns that Jim Reynolds, the former head of the Rangers and father of the girl Bob loves, Barbara Reynolds, has been murdered. Also in the interim, Brooks had been captured but had escaped and is suspected of being responsible for the killing. Buck Lawland, a former Ranger, spots Apache Joe in town and trails him but Joe sees Buck and kills him. Bob and Barbara are riding in the area, see the killing, and Bob sends Barbara back to town while he takes after Joe. The Rangers have all banded back together and they track down the gang, climaxing in a massive battle between the Rangers and the outlaws, while Bob saves Barbara, who has been captured, from a quicksand pit, after Slim shoots Brooks, which provides the answer to the trivia question of in what film did "Fuzzy" kill "Gabby"? [NEW]

31. The Brand of Hate (1934) - Bob Steele - The Camp and Larkin families are neighboring ranchers and young Rod Camp (Bob Steele), is in love with Joe Larkin's (William Farnum) daughter, Margie (Lucile Browne.) But, from out of nowhere, Joe's outlaw brother, Bill Larkins (George 'Gabby' Hayes) and his two worthless sons, Holt (James Flavin), and "Slim" (Archie Ricks), move in with the peaceful and law-abiding branch of the family. In addition to rustling cattle from the neighboring ranchers, Holt and "Slim" decide they have kissing-rights to cousin Margie, and this leads to Rod having a fight with them at a barn-dance. When Rod’s father (Charles K. French) catches the renegade Larkins rustling and changing brands on his cattle, he is shot. Rod sets out to prove they are the culprits. [NEW]

32. THUNDER IN THE DESERT (1938) - Bob Steele arrives looking for the killer of his uncle. When the Sheriff chases him and his partner Rusty, Reno thinks they are the men he is looking for and takes them into his gang. There Bob finds his uncle's gun and knows he has found the right gang. However he realizes the gang has an unknown leader and he sets out to find him. [NEW]

33. The Red Rope (1937) -Brade has hired Rattler Haynes to kill Tom Shaw (Bob Steele). But when Shaw intercepts a message between the two, he alters it hoping it will cause the two outlaws to fight each other. [NEW]

34. The Gallant Fool (1933) - Stunt-rider Kit Denton (Bob Steele) is the star of his father's circus, Rainey's Greater Shows. When the circus arrives in the small Western town of Big Ben, Charles Denton (Gabby Hayes) tells his son that he's been on the run for eighteen years and is a hunted man in this county. He explains that he left Big Ben when Kit was only a baby after being framed for murder and says he can only appear in public in clown makeup. Chris McDonald, who runs the county, has forbidden any circus from performing in Big Ben ever since the husband of Martha, whom McDonald loves, ran off to join the circus, taking her only child. Martha, still heartbroken, refuses McDonald's offer of marriage, hoping for the day when her husband and son will return to her. When Bart Connors, one of McDonald's men, orders the circus out of town, Denton refuses to leave. Kit then catches Connors trying to molest Kit's girl friend, Alecia Rousselet, and beats him up, but his father, who is against any man getting involved with a woman, orders Kit not to fight over Alecia. Kit then tells Alecia that he never met his mother and that he is forbidden from even speaking of her. McDonald then warns Denton that he will never finish his performance and orders Connors to shoot him during the show. As he buys a horse, Kit meets his mother, unaware of who she is, and invites her to the show. Connors then reports to McDonald that Denton will appear as a clown in the show. The show begins and, after many daring and sensational feats, "The Flying Dentons" begin their acrobatic routine. When Denton is seated in a rope swing near the top of the tent, Connors shoots him. Denton falls and dangles by one arm, but Kit rescues him just in time, then goes after the killer. Kit fights Connors and gets him to confess that McDonald was behind the attempted murder. Kit confronts McDonald, who then realizes that Kit is Martha's long-lost son. While Connors is being taken away by the sheriff, he shoots McDonald and, as he dies, he confesses to Kit that he framed Denton for murder because he loved Martha. He then points to Martha and dies. Denton, who received only a flesh wound, learns from Kit that McDonald tricked him into believing that he was a murderer all these years. Kit then escorts his mother into Denton's tent and they are reunited. [NEW]
