Don Winslow of the Coast Guard

The comic strip Don Winslow of the Navy was created by Lt. Com. Frank V. Martinbek in 1934. The strip was distributed by the Bell Syndicate from 1934 to 1955. Don Winslow was a spychasing Lieutenant Commander in Naval intelligence. The comic strip led to a radio adventure serial (see below) that began in 1937, as well as a two film serials released in 1942 and 1943. Original comics stories also appeared in Fawcett comic books starting in 1943.

1. Don Winslow of the Navy (1942) – Don Terry:

Don Winslow (Don Terry) is a top naval commander assigned to the islands around Pearl Harbor. There, naval intelligence has detected a ruthless gang of saboteurs who seek to destroy supply ships carrying rations and equipment for the troops and undermine the entire United States' war effort in the Pacific. With his right hand man Red Pennington (Walter Sande) and the help of the lovely Mercedes Colby (Claire Dodd) and Misty Gaye (Anne Wagel), Commander Winslow investigates. The foursomes face life-threatening dangers and discover that the mastermind behind this nefarious skullduggery is the Japanese agent known as The Scorpion (Kurt Katch). With the fate of the war in the balance, Commander Winslow must match wits and brawn with The Scorpion himself.

2. Don Winslow of the Coast Guard (1943) - Don Terry

The 13-chapter Don Winslow of the Coast Guard was the second of two Universal serials based on the comic strip Don Winslow of the Navy. Don Terry returns as Don Winslow, who has been promoted to Commander in this effort. Also returning is mystery villain The Scorpion, once more working in cahoots with the Japanese. Winslow's mission is to prevent the Scorpion from severing vital supply lines to America's armed forces.
